Thermal Desalination

Desalination plants separate sea and brackish water into two flows consisting of a freshwater stream (permeate in reverse osmosis, condensate in thermal processes) with a low salt content and a stream with a high salt concentration (brine or concentrate). Every desalination technology requires energy for this separation process, which is supplied to the system by thermal or mechanical means (generally as electrical power). The thermal desalination process is based on evaporation and the subsequent condensation of the steam.
The following thermal desalination technologies of WABAG demonstrate special strengths:
• Multi Effect Distillation (MED)
• Thermal Vapour Compression (MED-TVC)
• Mechanical Vapour Compression (MED-MVC)
• Multi Stage Flash (MSF)

Reverse Osmosis

Another form of desalination is reverse osmosis (RO) in which the salt is filtered out by means of special membranes and potable water is produced immediately. The major advantage of RO is its extremely low power requirements.
Reverse osmosis is a well-tried and tested technology for the production of desalinated water for use as both drinking and industrial process water. WABAG supplies RO plants in differing sizes for various types of raw water such as sea and brackish water and industrial effluent. Major attention is paid to economic factors such as chemical consumption, energy recovery, membrane durability and process automation. The result is optimum quality drinking, or process water at minimum cost. On the basis of our experience with plants of varying sizes, we offer economically advantageous and technically prove solutions for every application.
As a system supplier, we provide the required in- and outflow structures and place a special emphasis on efficient pre-treatment. In this connection, apart from conventional filtration technologies, highly effective micro- and ultrafiltration systems are employed.

Anaerobic Biological Processes

Anaerobic Biological Processes

Following nature’s example:
The copying of nature’s fascinating capabilities as perfectly as possible and their harnessing for technical applications represents a source of innovative renewal processes. Nature shows us in an exemplary manner that the organic matter contained in water can be converted biologically into energy-rich, and thus exploitable, biogas by micro-organisms in an oxygen-free medium. Therefore, the natural anaerobic degradation process constitutes recycling at its best.
As compared with conventional aerobic treatment methods, the anaerobic process offers significant benefits:
Key Features
 Very low energy consumption.
 Generation of exploitable biogas.
 Minimal sludge production.
 ◾Minimum space requirements.
 ◾Low nutrient requirement.
Space-saving, emission-free and profitable
The ever-stricter stipulations confronting industry with regard to the use of the natural resource water are boosting the demand for profitable, low-cost and highly efficient wastewater treatment systems. Many industrial plants are in sensitive locations, particularly in urban areas, that call for space-saving and emission-free treatment systems.
Due to intensive development work, WABAG has a range of modern reactors available, which can be beneficially employed in accordance with wastewater characteristics. Using our long-term experience from development and full-scale technical practice, we can design and supply optimised, tailor-made concepts for every application.
an-OPUR
This is a classic anaerobic contact process with fully mixed reactor (anaerobic activation process). Circulation is achieved through one or more special mixing devices fitted with guide tubes, which guarantee effective but gentle circulation in the reactor by means of sophisticated hydraulics.
Biomass separation takes place via sedimentation, which is carried out in a special lamella clarifier. The sedimentation unit can either be integrated into the reactor, or installed externally as a separate tank.

This type of reactor is generally employed with wastewater that can be anaerobically treated without major operational problems, but for which the use of granulated sludge is problematic (e.g. sugar- or pulp industry).

MEMTRICK®

BAF – Biofiltration

BIOPUR®
BIOPUR® is the biofiltration system developed by WABAG for the biological treatment of wastewater. It uses biofilms – which are cultivated on solid surfaces – to biologically degrade the pollutants in the wastewater. At the same time, suspended solids are captured by the filter materials. BIOPUR® is a modern and space-saving process that is capable of meeting the toughest of water treatment requirements in both municipal and industrial contexts.
The carrier materials and filter media are tailored precisely to water treatment needs and so the system is completely customizable for a multitude of applications. The system can be effectively combined with other treatment methods such as tertiary filtration, making it ideal for plants that are tasked with removing micropollutants.
WABAG’s BIOPUR has been continuously developed over more than 30 years and WABAG is among the very few companies in the world capable of delivering this most compact Biological Process.

FLUOPUR® is the name of WABAG’s moving bed process for the biological treatment of wastewater. It can be used as a moving bed (MBBR) on its own or in combination with activated sludge (hybrid or IFAS). The patented carrier material, which was developed by WABAG, is used to support biofilms that being a home for the bacteria will allow selecting for even slow growing species specialized for the elimination of a variety of pollutants .

The FLUOPUR® process requires less space than conventional activated sludge treatment and virtually any tank geometry can be selected. That makes FLUOPUR® ideal for extending existing activated sludge processes when they hit capacity bottlenecks or need to meet more stringent purity requirements.
Key Features
 Flexible, straightforward, space-saving system
 Cost-effective solution for a whole host of applications and plant sizes
 Ideal for extending existing plants (while making use of existing aeration equipment)
 Ideal for industrial wastewater (preliminary/full/

Aerobic Granular Activated Sludge

NEREDA®
NEREDA® is a highly advanced technology for biological wastewater treatment that is based on the SBR method and harnesses the power of aerobic granular sludge. With this technology, the bacteria grow naturally in compact granules instead of in flocs.

These granules have excellent settling properties, the advantages of which are many: the biomass concentration in the reactor is very high, but the sedimentation phase is extremely short. What’s more, the reactor can be filled while clear water is being extracted. This results in excellent biological performance since most of the cycle time can be spent on biological processes Together this leads to small reactors with minimal space requirements. Another factor is that many biological processes take place within the compact granules simultaneously. This results in high rates of nitrogen and biological phosphorus removal, and largely eliminates the need for precipitating agents.

Compared to conventional SBR technology, these systems are much more compact overall and produce a better quality of effluent.

Key Features

o Compact plants with minimal space requirements (around 50% compared to SBR)
o Flexibility of a batch process (SBR)
o High rates of biological nutrient removal
o A proven and robust process with minimal consumption of resources (energy, chemicals) that is characterized by its ease of operation

HYBRID™ – The two-stage activated sludge process for nitrogen removal

The HYBRID™ process is based on the conventional two-stage activated sludge process. However the activated sludges of both stages are not separated, but advantageously mixed through two innovative hybrid sludge cycles. The process was jointly developed by WABAG and the Vienna University of Technology .

The main advantages are:

Process stability:
The first process stage provides optimum load compensation, which even in the case of low wastewater temperatures secures the denitrification capacity of the second stage. This is an especially important advantage when dealing with industrial effluents or seasonal peak loads.

Economies over conventional single-stage plants:
The Hybrid process facilitates a considerable reduction in the tank volume required. Design comparisons for various plants have shown that in terms of total volume, approximately 30% can be saved.

Key Features
 Innovative HYBRID-sludge cycles:
o combined activated sludge in both stages,
o nitrification and denitrification in both stages
 Flexible way of operation:
o single stage / two stage,
o optimum adaptation facilities
 Advantages regarding operation costs
 Protection against toxic impacts due to two stage treatment
 Better hygenisation
 Ideal for plant extension:
o high flexibility regarding the layout
o cost-effective possibilities of integrating existing tanks

CYCLOPUR® – SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor).

SBR is a system for the biological treatment of wastewater. In contrast to conventional activated sludge processes where the wastewater is treated by passing it through a series of tanks, the SBR method involves carrying out the different steps one after another in the same tank.

As the reactors are filled on a batch-by-batch basis, several SBR tanks and/or an influent buffer tank are required to treat wastewater continuously. On the other hand, there is no need for the recirculation equipment that goes hand in hand with continuous systems, and the cleaning performance can be flexibly and perfectly adapted to requirements. The typical steps involved in the process are:
•Fill (mixed or aerated)
•Reaction: aeration or mixing
•Sedimentation
•Decantation: extraction of the clean water

Special decanter. The WABAG swivel-joint decanter has been designed by drawing on a wealth of experience from a variety of projects and is produced by us in house. The model is in use at several plants. Its defining features include a maintenance-free stainless steel swivel joint and the optimized hydraulics.

The CYCLOPUR® process is extremely flexible and suited to all types of wastewater and plant capacities.

Key Features
o Ultraflexible
